Adult Dependent Relative Advice

Immigration Advice for Bringing an Adult Relative to the UK for Care

Worrying about a parent or relative who can no longer manage everyday tasks is difficult when you live in another country. You may already be arranging appointments, paying carers or trying to find reliable help from a distance. Our immigration solicitors can assess if the Adult Dependent Relative route offers a realistic option. We look carefully at the care needed, the support available where your relative lives and the arrangements you could provide in the UK.

These applications need detailed evidence, and the Home Office fee can be substantial. Our legal team explains the strict requirements before you commit to a full application. We can identify gaps in medical reports, advise on enquiries with overseas care providers and review your maintenance, accommodation and care plan. You receive a reasoned assessment of the strengths and difficulties, together with the likely legal and third-party costs. We will explain if further evidence is needed before the case should proceed.

Adult Dependent Relative Visa Eligibility

The Adult Dependent Relative route covers a qualifying parent, grandparent, adult son or daughter, or adult sibling who needs long-term personal care because of age, illness or disability. The relationship and care requirements must both be met.

The UK sponsor must normally be British, settled, hold protection status or have a qualifying status under the EU Settlement Scheme. The applicant must need help with everyday personal tasks, and the required care must be unavailable or unaffordable in the country where the applicant is living, even with the sponsor's financial help.

The sponsor must be able to maintain, accommodate and care for the relative without public funds. An applicant seeking entry clearance must apply and obtain permission before travelling to the UK. A visit to the UK does not normally provide a route to switch into this category.

The relative must need help with everyday personal tasks because of age, illness or disability. A diagnosis alone is not enough. Medical evidence should describe the help required, its frequency and the likely duration of the need.

The application must then address the care available in the country where the relative lives. The issue is not simply that care in the UK would be preferable. The evidence must show that the required level of care cannot reasonably be obtained or afforded there, even with financial support from the UK sponsor.

Evidence of Care Needs and Overseas Care Options

  • Medical reports dealing with practical care needs and prognosis
  • Assessments or statements from current carers and family members
  • Enquiries with suitable care providers in the country of residence
  • Reliable information about the availability and cost of care
  • The sponsor's maintenance, accommodation and proposed care plan

We assess the relationship, sponsor status, medical condition, daily-care needs and the position in the country of residence. We can advise on reports from treating professionals, evidence from care providers, cost comparisons and the sponsor's maintenance, accommodation and care plan.

If the standard route cannot be met, we can consider if the facts raise a distinct human-rights application. We give clear advice on prospects and evidential weaknesses before an application is filed.

Why Adult Dependent Relative Visas Are Refused

Medical evidence showing illness or disability is only one part of the test. The application must establish a need for long-term personal care with everyday tasks and show that the required level of care cannot reasonably be obtained or afforded in the country where the relative lives, even with financial help from the UK sponsor.

Refusals commonly arise where medical reports do not describe functional care needs, overseas care enquiries are limited, available relatives or professional services have not been addressed, or the sponsor's maintenance and accommodation plan is unclear. We assess those gaps before the substantial application fee is paid and advise honestly if the evidence is not yet strong enough for this demanding route.

Adult Dependent Relative Visa Fees and Evidence Costs

At 15 September 2026, an application made outside the UK costs £3,635 where the sponsor is British or settled. A lower £452 fee applies where the sponsor has temporary protection status. An eligible in-country extension currently costs £1,407, although a new applicant generally cannot switch from a visit visa.

Medical reports, care assessments, certified translations and evidence about overseas care costs may create significant additional expense. The health surcharge depends on the permission being sought and any exemption. Our fee depends on the volume of medical and care evidence and the legal issues identified at the initial review.

Adult Dependent Relative FAQs

Adult Dependent Relative Visa Questions

Answers about care needs, eligible relatives, evidence, charges and settlement.

Which Relatives Can Apply?

The permitted relationships include a parent, grandparent, adult child or adult sibling, subject to the full rules. Financial dependency alone is insufficient; the application must also meet the long-term personal-care requirement. We check the family link and care evidence together before advising on eligibility.

What Does Long-Term Personal Care Mean?

The applicant must need help with everyday personal tasks because of age, illness or disability. Medical evidence should explain the condition and practical care needs. Reports should describe tasks such as washing, dressing or cooking and explain why help is needed. The diagnosis, functional limitations and likely duration must connect to the proposed care arrangements.

Is It Enough That UK Care Is Better?

No. The case must show the required care is unavailable or unaffordable in the country where the applicant lives, even with financial help from the sponsor. A preference for family care in Britain is not enough on its own.

Can an Applicant Switch From a Visitor Visa?

A new applicant normally has to apply from outside the UK and obtain entry clearance before travelling. We assess any existing ADR permission separately from a first application and explain why entering as a visitor does not remove the normal route requirements.

What Must the Sponsor Prove?

The sponsor must show qualifying status and the ability to maintain, accommodate and care for the relative without public funds. The proposed arrangement must be realistic over the required period. We review income, housing, care responsibilities and any required undertaking, including how needs would be met alongside the sponsor’s work and household commitments.

What Evidence Is Usually Required?

Evidence can include medical reports, care assessments, enquiries with providers, cost information, family circumstances, accommodation and the sponsor's finances. Overseas care enquiries should show what was investigated and why available arrangements cannot reasonably meet the need. General statements that care is poor or expensive may not address the individual circumstances.

How Much Does an Adult Dependent Relative Application Cost?

The Home Office fee varies by the sponsor's status and where the application is made. Medical, care, translation and legal costs can also be substantial. At September 2026 rates, the usual overseas fee is £3,635, with a £452 fee where the sponsor has temporary protection status. Reports, translations and legal work are separate, so a prospects review is useful before extensive spending.

Does the Visa Give Settlement?

An applicant joining a British or settled sponsor is generally granted settlement. Permission linked to a sponsor with temporary status usually ends when the sponsor's permission ends. The length of permission depends on the sponsor’s status and the applicable rules. A sponsor with temporary protection may lead to limited permission; check the actual grant rather than assume every successful ADR application gives immediate settlement.

What if an Adult Dependent Relative Visa Is Refused?

Many refusals carry a human-rights appeal. The refusal reasoning, evidence and tribunal deadline should be reviewed promptly. We compare the refusal with the medical and overseas care evidence, then assess any human-rights appeal or fresh application. Further reports need to address the missing legal requirement, not simply repeat the diagnosis.

What if another relative lives near the applicant overseas?

The Home Office may examine that person’s ability to provide the required care. Explain the actual relationship, availability, health, commitments and any practical barriers, supported by evidence where possible. It is not enough simply to prefer the UK sponsor, but the presence of another relative does not answer every care question.
